LUXURY & ARCHITECTURE WRITE-UP

Los Angeles Living Room by Alison Blumenfeld

Through the use of soft materials and the espousal of an atmospheric color palette, this cozy living room designed by Alison Blumenfeld, attests its ability to incite its users to roam in place and daydream while keeping their feet on the ground: where lie the dense and expressive textures of a large shag rug that echoes the openness of the space and anchors all its elements into one unified composition. An arrangement that sustains magnetizing rounded chairs which —seemingly performing gestural spins, as if nested in never-ending loops — are responsible for jazzing the room up and accentuating the sense of buoyancy already evoked by the space.

Despite its three-dimensionality, the area effortlessly emanates a two-dimensional conversation that travels across adjacent rooms; where it is interpreted, appreciated, and framed in a similar fashion as a Robert Motherwell chef-d’œuvre.

LUXURY & ARCHITECTURE WRITE-UP

Son Serra in Mallorca, Spain by BonVivant Concept

The redesign of Son Serra, a 18th-century estate in Mallorca, Spain by BonVivant Concept, epitomizes the word “connection” from the through-going beams in the ceilings to the likeness of the stone wall pattern to that of the tufted upholstery.

As it ensures connection between different rooms using large opening, it also embodies a connection between physical textures and projected textures. The physical textures, like the pleats in the sofa that carry additional organic lines inspire sophistication and integrity as if their spirit had aged and acquired wisdom throughout the years: an unintentional anachronism.

The projected textures are the sunlight’s emergence on the surface of the Trespol flooring through the large multi-shape windows.

The earthy color pallette, slightly desaturated perhaps as a way to express purity, is redistributed harmoniously by the variety of furniture elements as if they were individual instruments forming a symphony orchestra. Like so, the Modern Mackintosh chairs tenderly take the lead with their imposing heights and serve as a connecting element between the humility of the area and the boldness of the black metallic frames outlining the glass found in its perimeter.

The use and reuse of natural materials, as well as the maintenance of a rustic finish throughout the interior reattest a desire to nurture feelings of timelessness by paying homage to the space’s traditional essence while bridging it with contemporary vibes.

This vacation retreat is a proof that in order to create harmony in a place, disharmony must preexist, be identified and then transformed.

PRODUCT PITCH

DESKON: a platorm that eases the communication between footwear designers and manufacturers.

When discussing with experienced designers across the world, we have concluded that the issues encountered by most of them during the production of garments are quite similar. These issues are mostly related to the ambiguous nature of tech packs and the way they are interpreted, which slows down the prototyping phase and compromises the effective development of products.

Although, generally-speaking, designers have access to several tools that can optimise their workflow, we could not find any relevant tool in the market for shoe designers. Shoe design is a very precise and complicated practice, for this reason we thought it would be only fair and useful to conceive an innovative tool for this specific industry. We worked together to first analyse the typical shoe-making process in order to find the best solution that will fill the current gap in the market, while creating a better version of the shoe designers’ work process.

There are several factors that challenge the effectiveness of the production’s workflow but there are only a few that the designer is unable to fully control which are the unclear instructions, the incorrect interpretation and the assumptions made by the manufacturers.
This is why we believe that great communication is vital. Hence, we have designed a software that eases the communication between footwear designers and manufacturers, as well as their potential constructive to the final concept.

Deskon will be implemented as a platform that connects designers and manufacturers together as if they are sitting at the same table where the shoes are the center of attention and the starting point of a mutually constructive discussion. The different parties can then be actively involved in ensuring that the shoe concept travels smoothly from the design phase to a first-time perfect prototype.

Deskon will also contain features that will optimise the creation of the tech-pack itself by incorporating a resource library of CAD sample blocks illustrating different products, materials and finishes. The library will also contain pre-programmed and user-defined annotations that perfectly match the generic annotations used in the design, purchasing, and manufacturing phases of a prototype development process. In addition, the tech packs will include a 3D-rendered visualisation thanks to a partnership that we will secure with Clo3D, which is a fashion design software program creating true-to life garment visualization for the fashion and apparel industries.

FASHION COLLECTION STATEMENT

DISCORDANCE: How can we find utopia within a dystopian environmental structure?

The idea that beauty of nature always takes over and conquers despite everything. It grows from dirt, from pollution, and despair.

This collection illustrates a conflict between dystopia and utopias.

To physically represent this idea, we have decided to play with the golden ratio and various freeform shapes. We deconstructed and up-cycled different kinds of materials and pre-existing garments. Instead of refining these pieces, we embraced their raw anarchic nature, their rough textures, and their torn complexion. When combined with the more romantic, colourful, and glamorous materials, such as light, visually soft (illusion), but stiff sheer fabric, with prominent volumes and infinite pleats, a clash is created. A conflict arises. And a intriguing statement is made. The more appealing parts of the garments act like deeply rooted crawling or climbing plants finding their way out of the anarchy that’s invading their space; or, simply, progressively escaping hell. Hope, Survival, Optimism is conveyed. This cinematic genderless capsule collection is for those who want to look and feel fierce, bold, while remaining hyperconscious.

POEM

On a quiet evening

On a quiet evening

My eyes follow the dance of the soft wispy clouds.

Sitting still, I feel like I’m moving through a silently busy crowd.

My mind enters an unpredictable choreography.
I observe my soul follow the soaring birds in the sky;
and, my spirit moves at the tempo of the sinking sun.

Sitting still, I’m vibing to multiple layers of ambient sounds.

Amidst this anarchy of expression, my thoughts come together.

Dwelling in the present moment, I disregard the ticking sound of my pendulum in harmony with my in and outgoing breath.

Light, like the foliage
in the garden;
I found a place of
kindness and consciousness.

POEM

Bi-fold

Reminiscing
on the times we had.
Watching
the same curvy cloud
you’re seeing
on the other side.
On the other side,
I’m living,
if you ask. I’m not too bad.
Bipolar, I’m feeling.
Bipolar like the sky.
Bipolar, as you were.
